Excerpt

When she lifted the iron, wax covered the red maple leaf.

“Perfect,” she said and cut around the wax to remove her prize. It glowed in her hand like an autumn sunset.

She carried the leaf over to the waiting book. A cat eyed her from the patio before he pawed at the fallen leaves that collected by the door. He had showed up after his owner had disappeared.

Small screams rent the air when she opened the book. For a moment, the image of a man struggled against the leaf. His screams would fade, in time.

They always did.
